Research DescriptionThere are three research directions for my laboratory: (1) developing mouse genetics tools, (2) engineering mouse models for human diseases, (3) genetic manipulations in human pluripotent stem cells. Embryonic stem (ES) cells derived from inner cell mass of a mouse blastocyst are first described in 1981 by Dr. Martin Evans’ group. High germline transmission rate and development of genetic engineering tricks in mouse ES cells make mouse the most genetically tractable system. Mouse ES cell based technology thus causes a huge impact on the biomedical research and pharmacological industry in the past three decades. Human ES cells are first published in 1998. They, together with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), are becoming new platforms, different from the traditional model organisms and cell lines, for both basic researches on pluripotency and potential applications on preclinical drug screening. Our research interests are related to translational medicine applications using pluripotent stem cells and mouse genetics tools. We are interested in developing novel genetic approaches to exploit the murine and human ES cells as well as the arising diseased iPSC platforms.
